"Williams, Ebenezer (Capt.)" 14 October 1749 ? "Lebanon, New London, Connecticut" New York "Capt. Eben Williams, son of Jonathan Williams of Lebanon, CT

From the 17 Mar 1859 New York Reformer:

Messrs. Editors:
Among many other heroes of the war of the Revolution, and whose history, partly written and partly traditional, has been kept along through the long period which has intervened, was that of Capt. Eben Williams, son of Jonathan Williams of Lebanon, CT, and father of Deacon Ebenezer S. Williams of Pamelia. There were nine of the descendants of Jonathan Williams, whose united ages amounted to over 700 years. Capt. Eben Williams was 98 years of age at the time of his death. He was the eldest of the family, and entered the revolutionary army under Col. Patterson, of Berkshire, Massachusetts, in 1775, from which time to the close of the war he was in constant and varied service. He was in service in 11 States of the Union, and in the Canadas. He witnessed the Battle of Bunker Hill and the surrender of Burgoyne and Cornwallis. He was selected was by Col. Laurens as one of the two captains, with 40 men each, to compose the central storming party at the time when the final attack was made upon the position of Lord Cornwallis at Yorktown. The name of the other captain was Betts. At the Battle of Cedars, 39 miles from Montreal, he became a prisoner to the Indians, by whom he was robbed of his clothing, and after being kept in confinement 10 days, was exchanged. He continued in the army of Washington near the Hudson until the British evacuated New York; 25 Nov 1783, at which time he accompanied the victorious army in entree to that city, and was present when Gen. George Washington took leave of his officers, on 4 December 1783. He was never mustered during the whole war, sick, or absent, when duty required his presence. At the close of the war he became a member of the Massachusetts Cincinnati. About 1808 he removed from Massachusetts to Onondoga County, New York. In 1815 he was a resident of Scholarie County, and at the age of 96 years, wrote a legible hand without glasses, took care of small garden and chopped his own firewood, besides occupying his leisure time in reading. Another brother Enos Williams, died at Hamburgh, Erie County, within a year or two, at the advanced age of 92 years. He was the last of the family of brothers, all whom had lived long enough to see our republican institution matured and our nation taking rank among the most favored, as it the freest of the nations of the earth.
